The Cape Breton tartan tells a story through colour—grey for Cape Breton steel, green for its lofty mountains and rolling fields, and gold for the radiant sunsets over the lakes of Bras d’Or. Originally inspired by a poem written in 1907 by Mrs. Lillian Crewe Walsh of Glace Bay, the tartan was later designed by Mrs. Grant in 1957 to honour Cape Breton’s proud spirit and natural beauty.
