Description
The Smoky Mountains, part of the Appalachian Mountain range, have a rich history that intertwines coal mining, gemstone hunting and vibrant array of wildflowers. Coal mining has played a significant role in both the history and economy of the Great Smoky Mountains, starting in the early 19th century.
Along with coal, gemstone deposits were mined, offering up garnets, rubies, sapphires and quartz crystals. However, one of the prettiest sights are the famous fields of wildflowers blanketing the landscape and inspiring the name “Wildflower National Park”.
